I do remember this painting, however; The Rape of the Sabine Women. I took it because we had gone over this story in my Roman class not too long before. The story is that Rome after its founding, had no women. The city was open to anyone, so it was populated mostly by thieves and exiles. So they told the nearby city of Sabine that they wanted to have a series of games. Sabine agreed, and their women came to cheer them on. As soon as the Romans were in position, they kidnapped all the women and withdrew into their city, closing the gate. In the end though, the women fell in love with the Romans, and averted war between Rome and their home city.
